Business Support and Economic Development

Economic development remains at the heart of Colchester Borough Council´s activities for the foreseeable future
Economic development is principally concerned with ensuring a strong local economy, to enable existing businesses to thrive and new business ventures to succeed.

Economic development is also concerned with ensuring that a wide variety of jobs are available in the borough, including skilled employment, to allow people to work locally. Conversely, it is important that people with the right skills are available locally to serve existing and potential businesses.

Colchester has long been a centre for educational excellence due to its high performing schools and colleges and the presence of the prestigious University of Essex. By continuing to work with our partners, the Council will ensure that this reputation is maintained and built upon.

Haven Gateway Partnership
The Haven Gateway Partnership was launched in May 2001. Colchester Borough Council is a core partner, along with Tendring, Suffolk Coastal, Ipswich, Babergh, Essex and Suffolk Councils, Associated British Ports (Ipswich), Harwich Haven Authority, Harwich International Port, Port of Felixstowe and the East of England Development Agency (EEDA).

The mission statement of the partnership is:

"To provide a framework through which partner organisations can work together to promote economic opportunities and secure the future prosperity of this major gateway to the East of England".

Town Management
Colchester Town Partnership (CTP) Ltd was established in December 2002 under the chairmanship of local businessman, Tony Hales. Although intended to be independent, Colchester Borough Council (CBC) has provided significant funding to the partnership and will continue to work closely with the CTP to ensure that Colchester becomes the prestige town in the East of England.

Chris Rawlinson is the Executive Director of the CTP, better known as the Town Manager. She reports to a Board of Directors comprising local retailers and businesses and a Council representative, Councillor Ken Jones.
