Lively market town, established as a religious community by St. Withburga in the 7th C. 18th C. buildings surround the market place, whilst the partly Norman church has a detached bell tower. Bishop Bonner´s Cottages are noted for their pargetting. The poet William Cowper lived here from 1796 until his death.
