Indoor model village and railways depicting the countryside of the 1920/30s through exquisitely crafted 1:76 scale models. Truly 3-dimensional art.
Enjoy the smallest details in models only 10cm (4 inches) high at Pendon Museum. The rural Vale of White Horse landscape is the 21m (70ft) centrepiece of Pendon's displays and a testimony to Pendon's founder, Roye England, who established the Museum in 1954. Imagine the summer's day of the 1920/30s the scene represents, when the pace of life was slower and modern development was yet to gather momentum. Steam was still king and the tranquility of the scene was periodically disturbed then, as now in our model, by the trains of the Great Western Railway.
Wonder at trains crossing the iconic Brunel timber viaduct, which forms part of our Dartmoor scene, and enjoy the insights given by our guides into the fascinating world of 1920s and 30s, the railways of the day and the communities they served. Learn about the development of railway modelling through the pioneering work of John Ahern in his Madder Valley Railway, which we are proud to host at Pendon.
We also mount special exhibitions: from April to September 2006 celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of I K Brunel. A 'Brunel Trail' at Pendon will highlight the many characteristic works of the great engineer featuring in our model scenes. At the end of September, an exhibition will open devoted to the life and work of Pendon's founder, Roye England, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birth.
