Town Twinning

Town Twinning and International Links

Peterborough has twinning links with five cities: Bourges - France, Viersen - Germany, Alcala de Henares - Spain, Forli - Italy, Vinnitsa - Ukraine

Twinning started in Europe after the Second World War. Its purpose was to promote friendship and greater understanding between the people of different European cities. A twinning link is a formal, long-term friendship agreement involving co-operation between two communities in different countries and endorsed by both local authorities.

The International Links Service aims to foster these links through social, recreational, cultural and educational partnerships and encourage greater participation by the people of Peterborough. The service operates in a number of different ways:

1) Organising events, exchange visits and partnership links. The Peterborough Festival has recently been the vehicle for such organised events.

2)Facilitating links between schools, sports, social, business and cultural organisations.

3)Working with societies that support the links with the twin towns.
