The Bell dates back to the 17thC when it was a flourishing Coaching Inn frequented by King George II who oftern stayed there en route from Lowestoft to London. It was largely re-built in the mid 1800s following a fire, but parts of the original building still remain.
It was acquired in 2002 by chef Andrew Blackburn who promptly set to work to restore its reputation as the place to eat and stay in Saxmundham.
He immediately embarked on a carefully planned programme of sympathetic renovation, redecoration and refurbishment which started with the kitchens and public areas and has now involuded all 10 guest rooms. Each bedroom has been individually styled and furnished to suit its particular features.
The simple dining room with its crisp green and white decor, its uncluttered look and its immaculate table linen and sparkling glassware is the perfect setting in which to soak up the hotel's warm, friendly atmosphere and to sample Andrew's excellent cooking.
In his completely re-fitted kitchen Andrew creates traditional English and French dishes which are distinctive without over-elaboration. He uses good, fresh local produce wherever possible and his menus are well balanced with interesting combinations and flavours.
The wine list, which is designed to compliment and enhance the enjoyment of the food, is extensive, well balanced, interesting and reasonably priced.
