Hadleigh is a traditional market town set in the heart of the Suffolk countryside. Once a Viking Royal town, Hadleigh prospered through its wool and cloth trade in the 14th and 15th centuries.
The High Street is lined with marvellous timber-framed houses and a wide range of interesting shops, pubs and restaurants. Visit on a Saturday morning or on a Friday, which is market day, to experience the unique atmosphere of an English market town.
Just a few steps from the town centre, visit the Deanery Tower with its polygonal turrets, built in 1495; St. Mary´s Church; the Guildhall; the cricket meadow; the market place and war memorial.
The River Brett meanders its way from the north edge of the town, parallel to the High Street, under picturesque Toppesfield Bridge, through a mill pool and then on to Higham, where it joins the River Stour in Constable Country.
There is an excellent circular walk that takes in the High Street, Hadleigh´s two bridges, Iron Bridge and Toppesfield Bridge, and a nature reserve, in just 30 minutes. Other local tourist attractions include Kersey, Lavenham and Dedham.
