Newmarket is like no other town in England. From early morning you can see why - as the roads, fields and all aspects of life are dominated by the world of horseracing.
Newmarket is the home of horseracing, and has a deep equine and royal heritage with its two racecourses - the July Course and the Rowley Mile, the latter named after King Charles II´s favourite horse 'Old Rowley'. It is also where Charles II built a royal palace and established the first racecourse in Britain. He is credited for the development of racing as we know it today, organising and often racing in The Newmarket Town Plate, a race that is still run today.
All aspects of horseracing can be enjoyed as The Jockey Club, National Stud and the home of the National Horseracing Museum are all located in the town, with the racecourse offering fine entertainment and the chance of a flutter from Spring to Autumn.
Newmarket is a thriving town, with excellent shopping facilities and parking and a wide range of superb accommodation for those wishing to stay overnight.
When in Newmarket, it is easy to take the opportunity to visit the nearby historic towns and cities of Cambridge, Ely, Bury St. Edmunds, Mildenhall and Brandon, allowing visitors to prolong their stay in this beautiful part of East Anglia.
