Houghton House

The ruins of a 17thC country house, built in the heights near Ampthill and believed to be the 'House Beautiful' in Bunyan´s, Pilgrim´s Progress.

The shell of a 17th Century mansion with magnificent views, reputedly the inspiration for the 'House Beautiful' in John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress. Built around 1615 for Mary, Dowager Countess of Pembroke, in a mixture of Jacobean and classical styles, the ground floor of two Italianate loggias survive, possibly the work of Inigo Jones.
