It played an important role in the prosperity of Maldon through the centuries. A number of Thames Sailing Barges, originally used for transporting cargo, still use the Quay today, some being available for charter. An ideal to location for watching the waterfront activities, viewing the river and saltings.
Hythe Quay is an ideal location for a visit, whether it be overnight or just for a few hours. There are two pubs virtually on the Quay and many more excellent restaurants and pubs within a few minutes walk. At one end we have an award winning park, and at the other, pubs, restaurants, a high street and chandlery.

Opening Hours
Following the untimely death of Brian Field (The Maldon Knot Man) in March 2003, Sarah Ford, his assistant for a number of years has agreed to take over this valuable role on the Quay. Sarah can be seen on the Quay during most weekends throughout the Spring and Summer, and during the odd good day in Autumn and Winter.
Some barges hold open days from time to time alongside the Quay, when members of the public are invited to come aboard for a look around. Information on open days can be obtained from the River Warden at the above address. Alternatively, if you would like to visit the newly opened heritage centre on board the sailing barge ´Glenway´ you could arrange a visit by contacting Topsail Charters based in Cooks Yard. www.top-sail.co.uk or telephone 01621 857567.
