The Malthouse Project is the conversion of a 17th century Grade II listed building in Bury St Edmunds into a unique visitor attraction providing a Heritage Centre, community café & guided tours.
The building at one time was used as a maltings & there is evidence throughout of original features & artefacts, which can be seen today. The Heritage Centre offers a variety of historical resources, incl artefacts dating back to the 1600s, a model of the malting process & a photographic exhibition of the restoration project.
Since completion, the Project has received 2 architectural awards for the intricate use of combining old & new materials. Oak beams, wooden floorboards & tiles are all original features that blend with the new oak beams & doors making it the award-winning building that it is today.
Free guided tours are available offering an insight into the history of the malthouse, the role it held in the past & the building’s use now.
The café, situated in the old kiln room, provides a charming setting to relax & enjoy fine food & a range of hot & cold drinks. The chef’s special is the malthouse loaf!
There is also the facility to hire community rooms at the Project for formal or informal functions. Each room offers surroundings with character for all types of events. All rooms have the latest audio visual equipment & can be catered for in house by the café staff.
