Duxford began as an airfield in WW1 and played a vital part in WW2 as an RAF fighter station and later as an American fighter base. Acquired by the Imperial War Museum in 1976, today Duxford is the centre for historic aviation with many of its wartime buildings, such as control tower, operations room and hangars still used.
In 1992 the Land Warfare Hall was added and in 1997 the American Air Museum was completed as a tribute to American air power and a memorial to US airmen of WW2.
Pioneering and inspiring aircraft from iconic Spitfires through to Concorde form a part of a matchless collection of aviation and military history in the unique setting of a former Battle of Britain frontline fighter station.
Duxford's celebrated 7000m2 Land Warfare Hall contains a superb collection of tanks, military vehicles and artillery.
Designed by Lord Foster, the American Air Museum is an outstanding example of contemporary British architecture which houses a collection of historic aircraft including B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator, SR-71 Blackbird and the U-2 spyplane, supported by fascinating artefacts.
Duxford is also famous for hosting world-class airshows, beautifully staged and choreorgraphed.
