Opened in 1835, this friendly, family size museum shows local history, natural history, discovery centre, geology, decorative arts, ethnography and archaeology plus an ancient Egyptian tomb and Wallace the lion. There are Norman castle ruins in the grounds. Museum of the Year in 1997. Award, Best Museum of Social History. Good access for disabled people. Open 363 days a year. Regular programme of special exhibitions, events and activities suitable for all ages. Small car park and picnic area.
