Throughout the summer, Harwich boasts a number of events including a Festival of the Arts, Redoubt Fort Fete, regular Farmer´s Markets and the Tour de Tendring Cycle Ride. Harwich also has walking and cycling trails - The Essex Way footpath runs all the way from Harwich to Epping - a total of 81 miles. The Maritime Trail guided walk is an ideal way to spend a sunny afternoon taking in the area´s history and heritage.
There is a sports centre with swimming, squash, tennis, badminton and skate board park as well as a 9 hole golf course. The Ha´Penny Pier is a favourite spot for fisherman and for ship watching, and the quay provides a wonderful resting place. Gazing across the estuary, the vibrant green mound of Shotley contrasts vividly with the sharp steel horizon of Felixstowe Port.
Harwich Redoubt Fort - built to repel Bonaparte´s threateened invasion. The Redoubt Fort is just one of Harwich´s historic buildings and is the ideal place to spend and afternoon. Other historic buildings include Harwich Lifeboat Museum, Ha´Penny Pier Visitor Centre, Electric Palace Cinema, and the High and Low Lighthouses.

Dovercourt Blue Flag Beach Just to the south of Harwich is the older town of Dovercourt with its sandy shores. It has Victorian charm and a line of majestic cliffs - and a Blue Flag beach.
